Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : Wisdom 18:6-9

You always protect us.

  • Today's first reading tells of the experience the Israelites gained from the exodus-wilderness period.
  • The Israelites held faith in God’s promise to pass them over.
  • Because the Israelites were prepared, they were saved.

Reading II : Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19

In faith we believe what we do not see.

  • The Letter to the Hebrews tells of Abraham and Sarah and their faith and trust in the Lord.
  • Abraham left his homeland out of faith, and Sarah conceived Isaac through faith.
  • Like the Israelites, Abraham and Sarah believed in God’s promises and listened to his commands.

Gospel : Luke 12:32-48

We must be ready for God to act in our lives at any time!

  • In the Gospel of Luke, the discussion of possessions is raised again.
  • Disciples need not worry about collecting possessions, they should be given to the poor.
  • Jesus cites two parables, one concerning servants ready for when their master returns, and a second concerning homeowners being prepared for if a thief comes.
