Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul

Reading I : Acts 12:1-11

Now I know for certain that the Lord rescued me from the hand of Herod.

  • King Herod was persecuting Christians.
  • Peter was arrested.
  • An angel of the Lord rescued Peter from prison.

Reading II : 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18

From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me.

  • Paul’s letter is like an obituary for himself, assessing his work.
  • Peter says that he has competed well, finished the race, and kept the faith.
  • Paul and all who faithfully follow Christ will wear the garland of victory.

Gospel : Matthew 16:13-19

You are Peter, and I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

  • Jesus says to the disciples, “Who do you say that I am?”
  • Simon Peter replies, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
  • Jesus says to Peter, “Upon this rock I will build my Church.”
