Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : 1 Kings 17:17-24

Elijah raises the widow’s son from death.

  • This story is set in the reigns of Ahab of Israel and his son Joram and focuses particularly on the interaction of the king with various prophets. In this case Elijah.
  • The name Elijah means “The Lord is my God.”
  • This is an example of God’s control over life and death, and Elijah’s power to mediate divine power.
  • Widows had no source of income if they were not supported by the king or religious community.

Reading II : Galatians 1:11-19

Paul’s transformation and travels.

  • This passage moves from Saint Paul’s autobiography to his initial relations with the Apostles in Jerusalem.
  • It deals with Saint Paul’s own calling as a missionary and his change from his former life.
  • He reports that the Gospel came from a revelation from Jesus Christ.

Gospel : Luke 7:11-17

The widow’s son raised by Jesus.

  • Jesus’ power over death is displayed to the widowed mother whose only son has died.
  • In Luke 7:16 it will be revealed that “A great prophet has risen in our midst.”
  • This resuscitation is alluding to Elijah’s resurrection of the widow’s son.
