Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : 2 Kings 5:14-17

Thank God for the good things he does for you.

  • The story from the Second Book of Kings is part of the Elijah-Elisha cycle of prophetic legends.
  • When Naaman came to Elisha to request a cure, Elisha sent him to wash seven times in the Jordan River.
  • Naaman's physical cure becomes the basis of faith in the God of Israel.

Reading II : 2 Timothy 2:8-13

There is no chaining the word of God!

  • Today's reading from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy continues the series of exhortations for ministers of the gospel.
  • Those who suffer hardships with Christ and for him, who die and are faithful to the end with him, will live with Christ in the kingdom.
  • This letter stresses the rewards and punishments for service and failure.

Gospel : Luke 17:11-19

Be grateful.

  • The Gospel reading today tells the story of a healing.
  • The ingratitude of the other lepers is a surprising account, but the fact that the one grateful returnee was a Samaritan was possibly more shocking at the time.
  • The Samaritan is not only healed, he is also saved through wholeness and a proper relationship to God.
