John Neumann, Bishop
After attending a diocesan seminary, John Neumann came to the United States from the Czech Republic. Soon after his arrival he was ordained a priest and served European immigrants on the frontier. He joined the Redemptorist Order and established many schools. Later, John was named bishop of Philadelphia. He encouraged religious orders to settle in the area. He also built a number of new parishes and began building a cathedral. His feast day is January 5.
