Ordinary Time

For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfolded as we seek God's truth and understanding.

Sunday Readings and Backgrounds

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19

Before you were born, you were known, consecrated and appointed.

  • Jeremiah was commissioned as a prophet to speak out against faithlessness and injustice.
  • Although his message was unpopular and his task painful, Jeremiah kept at it.
  • God promised to remain with Jeremiah and to deliver him in the end.

Reading II : 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13

Love is the greatest gift of God.

  • In today’s beloved passage from 1 Corinthians, Paul tries to persuade his listeners that love is worth more than all other gifts.
  • Love always seeks the good of another.
  • Paul stresses that love is the touchstone of the mature Christian.

Gospel : Luke 4:21-30

Jesus was sent for us.

  • In today’s passage from the Gospel of Luke, Jesus meets with great opposition from the people of his hometown.
  • Jesus cites two examples in which prophets left the covenant people and worked miracles for Gentiles.
  • The people from Jesus’ hometown can not bear the truth that God’s Word moves freely anywhere God chooses.
