Ordinary Time

For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfolded as we seek God's truth and understanding.

Sunday Readings and Backgrounds

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1

They will look on him whom they have pierced.

  • Zechariah foretells the suffering of Christ.
  • This is also the suffering of the followers of Christ.
  • Prophets in this period were aware that God would reign over evil.

Reading II : Galatians 3:26-29

You have put on Christ.

  • Baptism into Christ means accepting our call to die to ourselves.
  • Our unity in Christ is expressed by our membership in the Church.
  • Paul reminds us that we receive all that God has promised of old.

Gospel : Luke 9:18-24

Who do you say I am?

  • This is perhaps the most compelling and pithy question asked by Jesus at any time.
  • The theme is repeated that we must die to ourselves to be his followers.
  • Peter speaks on behalf of the whole Church when he proclaims that Jesus is the Messiah.
